Modified Monday Roundup - May 18

Here's a recap of how McQuaid Jesuit's modified sports teams fared last week.
This feature will run every Monday throughout the spring season.

Baseball
The Knights continued their undefeated season with a 7-2 win over crosstown rival Aquinas last Thursday. Drew Schultz, '31 led the way with four shutout innings, striking out seven. Austin Coon, '30 entered the game with the bases loaded in the seventh inning and retired the only two batters he faced to nail down the win. Hitting standouts included Cullen Schulz, '30 with a two-run double and Ryan Calnon, '30 with two runs batted in. Ashton Greenfield, '31 added two hits. On Tuesday, McQuaid blanked School of the Arts 9-0 with Luke Mosher, '30 collecting three hits and CJ Urban, '30 added two. Calnon threw two shutout innings and Caden Oliver, '31 pitched the final inning and recorded three strikeouts.

The Knights' season continues with three more games this week.

Crew
With most of the crew on a class trip, Sebastian Tirre, '31 competed as the coxswain for the novice 4 in Syracuse at the Syracuse Chargers Regatta. It was his first time racing in a '4' after being in an 8-man boat all season. "He really picked up the steering quickly," says head coach Jon Covney, '06. The Knights close the season this weekend with a fun "home" race on the Erie Canal in the village of Pittsford, with competition on Saturday and Sunday.

Lacrosse
The Knights lost a 7-6 heartbreaker to Hilton. Jack Ciardi, '30 led the way with two goals for McQuaid, while single goals were scored by Colin Koecheler, '31, Jax Odenbach, '31 Kelian Brown, '31 and Jason Leusch, '30. Odenbach added two assists. "The boys are working their butts off, and their effort has been a real driver and focus the last couple of weeks," head coach Chad Anderson says. "They have significantly increased their effort in tight situations, and there's not a doubt in my mind they will be rewarded for that throughout in our last two games.

The Knights host Brighton at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, then visit Honeoye Falls-Lima for a 4:30 game on Thursday.

Rugby
The Knights went 2-1 on the week. They beat Corning 4 tries to 2, lost to Kenmore 6 tries to 1, and beat Fairport 3 tries to 2. Top individual performances were turned in by eighth-grader Finn Graham (20 tackles, 3 tries, 2 try assists) and seventh-grader Connor Ramirez (3 turnovers, 6 tackles). "It was great to see the team really develop this week and see the hard work from practice pay off in the games," head coach Joe Damico, '24 says. The Knights have this weekend off but will be back in action for their final tournament in Syracuse on Saturday, May 30.

Track and field
All meets last week were canceled by inclement weather. This week, the Knights have meets Tuesday at East High and Thursday at Charlotte, both starting at 5 p.m. They'll be competing against Loretta B. Johnson, World of Inquiry, and Northwest/Andrew Langston Middle School.
